When Indiana businessman Jacob Young and his wife, Nancy Jane, were found murdered along the banks of the White River, suspicion turned to Nancy Clem, Young's former business partner and a Gilded Age confidence woman. Gamber's (Robert F. Byrnes Professor in History, Indiana Univ. Bloomington; The Female Economy) account of the shady business dealings of Clem, as well as the Youngs' killing and subsequent courtroom drama, is a tale of murder and mystery. While deeply researched and containing information from a variety of sources, including newspapers and documents from Clem's trial, Gamber lets the facts tell the story. Her account invites readers to delve into Gilded Age politics to determine whether the titular notorious Mrs. Clem was on trial for the murder of the Youngs or rather for straying from the gender norms of the period. In addition, the book offers a window into many fascinating Indiana politicians who became entangled in the case, such as Benjamin Harrison, who would later become U.S. president. VERDICT The combination of whodunit, courtroom drama, and Gilded Age politics will provide broad appeal to true crime fanatics as well as historians.--Mattie Cook, River Grove PL, IL
