This is the 21st volume in this series connecting specific pieces of pop culture with the critical techniques of philosophy. There's nothing wrong with making philosophy palatable to neophytes--many of us remember our first philosophy course in college and how it left us seeing the world differently--but the writings in this collection resolutely trivialize both their subject and the approach. As essays on philosophy, the pieces seldom rise above the superficial and never draw near originality. As social commentary--pop criticism--they are banal. The television series 30 Rock (which did not authorize this book in any way) is great fun to watch: the dialog is witty and the situations outrageous. But this book isn't fun at all. The contributors, unlike the show's writers, don't write well, and they have little of interest to say. In essay after essay, a thin veneer of philosophical jargon is laid over uncritical enthusiasm for 30 Rock. VERDICT It's doubtful that even fans of the show will want to read this collection. Not recommended.--David Keymer, Modesto, CA
