No, this isnt a manual about NFL fans who are waiting for UFOs to take them to the great Super Bowl in the skythis is what the English call football, the Spanish call ftbol, the Germans call Fuball, and we call soccer. Though no definition of cult is provided, the material here is often offbeat, whether well known or barely remembered: players with amazing ability and bizarre personalities; eccentric but winning coaches (or gaffers); teams with unusual histories or rabid fans; epic games; hotly contested rivalries; and more (there are some great lists in the Culture chapter). Irreverent, fun, and fast-moving, its also quite current, including events as recent as spring 2010 (the relegation of English team Portsmouth, for example). This is not a book for the casual fan whos just discovered soccer via Landon Donovans performance at the most recent World Cupor maybe it is.
