McKibben not only writes clarion books about global warming but is also actively involved in mobilizing a movement to address the problem. He and a group of recent college graduates launched the Web site StepItUp2007.org to encourage people across the country to organize rallies and demand that Congress cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050. The idea caught fire on the Web, and 1,400 demonstrations were held in all 50 states. Now McKibben and friends tell the impressive Step It Up creation story and offer a lively, convincing how-to for revitalizing social-change movements. A set of commonsensical and shrewd organizing principles and a realistic list of priorities are supported by detailed advice and examples, and all are wreathed with clearly stated information about global warming. McKibben and company describe the snappy innovations of the do-it-yourself movement, from creative T-shirts and signs to effective Web-site design and clever uses of YouTube and craigslist, and offer guidance on how to ensure media coverage. In all, an invaluable activist handbook for the digital age.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
