Ch gyam Trungpa (1940-87), among the first Tibetan Buddhist lamas to bring his teaching to the West and a prolific popularizer of Eastern religion, published numerous volumes of his collected discourses, poetry, and ruminations on art. Here, editor Gimian draws from more than a dozen of Trungpa's works, including one that is forthcoming, in an effort to present "a coherent whole" expressing the essence of his teachings. In this instance, however, stringing together even chapter-length extracts obfuscates rather than clarifies an already enigmatic message. Popular collections needing greater representation of the author can choose from Trungpa's many in-print titles, such as Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Shambhala, 1995. reprint).
