Brewster (psychology, Columbia Univ.) has edited an intriguing collection of personal narratives. These very direct and plain-spoken stories relate the experiences of more than two dozen Americans as they negotiate their personal atheism in settings such as work, romance, and marriage. Few are professional writers in any sense, and what is notable, in the age of Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins and the other publicists of the New Atheism, is the relative lack of argumentation and the foregrounding of experience. As Brewster notes, the accounts of these authors, far from conveying hipness, strongly parallel gay and lesbian coming-out narratives, reminding us all that America's public face is still strongly theistic and even Christian. VERDICT New atheists and those curious about nonbelief will find no new shafts for their quivers here but instead an anthropology of atheistic Americans. This volume should appeal to academics and some spiritual seekers.
