This handy, beautifully formatted, and colorfully illustrated guide is full of travel tips and advice for young people interested in planning overseas adventures such as spending a gap year prior to going to college, volunteering, working, or studying abroad. Some of the information is geared specifically toward travelers from North America, Australasia, and the UK. Highlights include a list of 20 big trips (Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania; Edinburgh, Scotland; the Grand Canyon; India's Taj Mahal; Australia's Great Barrier Reef; New York City; Iguazu Falls in South America; Burning Man Festival; Vietnam's Halong Bay; the Great Pyramids of Egypt; Ko Phi Phi in Thailand; Tokyo; Paris; the Hermitage in Russia; China's Tiger Leaping Gorge; motorcycling through Argentina, Chile, and Peru; the Galapagos Islands; or Angkor Wat in Cambodia) selected by the authors, full-page maps of continental areas, spectacular full-color photographs, and first-person experiences. A typical section delves into possible itineraries, various activities, when to go, and what to expect in terms of food, language, customs, costs, and local people. The five-page index is adequate. VERDICT Recommended for young, novice travelers eager to see the world.--Elizabeth Connor, Daniel Lib., The Citadel, Military Coll. of South Carolina, Charleston
