The situation that we are born into colors the lens through which we see the world. This is important to acknowledge during a time when diversity and race relations have reached a boiling point in the U.S. Peer, a strategy consultant and executive coach, presents an intelligent approach to the subject using research and personal narratives to show readers how she uncovered her own biases. For example, situations that seemed normal to her, such as having twelve-year-old maids serve her family during her childhood in South Korea in the 1950s, would seem abnormal to those raised in America. Stories like these connect the book's three sections: diversity and divides, diversity journey, and advancing pervasive diversity. Each chapter ends with "Essential Takeaways" which include key ideas and exercises that challenge readers, such as "reflect on how prevalently society describes people: as a race or as an individual." This book is well-organized, easy to read, and thought-provoking. There is no preaching and no rules; Peer just asks for readers' willingness to think and grow when it comes to their diversity mindset.
