Imagine a world in which businesses work together to create a greener society, one with an almost invisible carbon footprint, and one that also protects its citizens and ensures high standards for workers in every country. The authors have compiled this collection of essays, which highlight the ways in which the world is already changing to meet new demands and standards. As interesting as these works are, narrator Ted Barker reads with such a dry tone that he sucks the life out of them, making listening a tedious task. With a droning voice, Barker works his way through the material without attempting to entertain--seeming to let the material speak for itself. L.B. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
Experts on global sustainability and organizational learning say we must change the way we live and work for the earth to support future generations. With his coauthors, Senge says that changes in technology always precede periods of social transformation like we're going through now. Together they show how calcified organizations can be modified to reduce waste and toxicity, conserve water, and preserve the biodiversity that sustains the planet. The elegant-sounding Patrick Frederic narrates the book's introductions and major sections with unwavering respect for their weighty content. The less appealing voice of the principal author, heard in the remaining sections, works, nonetheless, because of his warmth and belief in his message. This production is a winning example of how professional talent and an author's audible determination can work together to sell an important message. T.W. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
