Author and narrator Jerry White, who lost his leg to a land mine, weaves personal experience with stories from other survivors to reveal the skills needed to survive--even to triumph over--crisis. He explores common themes of trauma, loss, and pain with empathy and power. Using his voice effectively, he characterizes other survivors, giving the impression of multiple narrators. With careful pacing and understatement, White outlines a specific five-step program to cope with disaster, a program that turns tragedy into triumph and leaves many survivors grateful for their traumatic experience. His gut-level honesty, humor, and sense of irony make this a compelling listen. G.D.W. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine

Author and reader White, corecipient of the 1997 Nobel® Peace Prize, here shares his personal crises (among them, losing his leg in an accident) as well as those of his friends, family members, and celebrities (from athlete Lance Armstrong to the late Princess Diana), focusing on the ways in which they've successfully rebounded. White's five-step coping technique contains references to God, tough love, and the Bible. With a clear, distinctive, and emotive but even voice, White's reading is well paced; his female voices are especially convincing. Recommended for public and inspirational libraries.
