Nobel Prizewinning physicist Laughlin asserts that we will likely run out of fossil fuels long before we destroy the earth's heat balance, so we should focus more attention on energy sources of the future rather than on climate change. He imagines a future in which we've run out of petroleum and coal and must rely on other means to produce energy as the developing world heightens the demand for it. Using language and measures that are understandable by, if completely astounding to, the nonscientific reader, he examines the science, politics, religion, and other subjective factors that affect predictions and the assumptions behind ideas about how to remedy the current energy situation. He interweaves scientific explanations and personal observations of beach-rock formations near his home and other mundanities as he draws on geology, economics, psychology, and sociology to examine our behavior, our beliefs, and the cold, hard reality of the diminishing supply of fossil fuels. An illuminating, ultimately hopeful perspective on energy policy.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
