Set in 1906, Gray’s winning sequel to 2016’s A Most Extraordinary Pursuit finds the charming and eminently sensible Emmeline Truelove boarding a train for Scotland at London’s King Cross Station. Sinister others, the two discover, want to get their hands on this artifact. Gray smoothly blends fantasy elements into the twisty plot, which builds to a shocking yet satisfying climax. Massot captures Emmeline Truelove's brusque, businesslike manner as she carries out her duties as director of The Haywood Institute for the Study of Time in the early 1900s. When handsome scoundrel Lord Silverton suddenly disappears, Massot's brusque tone shifts to one of desperation as Emmeline realizes she's fallen in love with him. As Emmeline travels through time to find Lord Silverton in the 1300s, Massot's narration keeps the complicated plot clear. She uses fitting accents to differentiate the characters in the various countries and time zones. Fans of time-travel stories should start with the first book to better enjoy the sequel.
