In their second historical outing (after Shadows over Denali), coauthors Peterson and Woodhouse welcome readers back to Alaska's Curry Hotel, where hearts are mended and souls find peace. The guests this time are siblings Collette and Jean-Michel Langelier and widow Katherine Demarchis and her grandmother. The shock of seeing her old flame, Jean-Michel, forces Katherine to reevaluate her life. But will faith and love be enough to overcome the wounds of war?

Peterson and Woodhouse return to the foothills of Denali in book two of their enthralling Heart of Alaska series, following In the Shadow of Denali (2017). When Katherine Demarchis unexpectedly reconnects in Alaska with her first love, Jean-Michel Langelier, their intensely charged reunion spurs confusion. As a young widow, Katherine struggles with the emotional scars from her abusive marriage. Jean-Michel is battling his own demons, suffering from PTSD after his time in the French army. Both long to save the other but realize the path to healing and a second chance at love can only come after confronting their own brokenness head-on. Peterson and Woodhouse once again prove to be a dynamic authorial duo in this deeply personal novel. Set in 1925, Out of the Ashes holds up well as a stand-alone novel, but series readers will be delighted with the substantial continuation of Cassidy and Allan's story. The characters' varying experiences with loss and questions of worth are interwoven beautifully, and rich wisdom from Christian and scriptural sources is poured into moments of despair and doubt.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
