This debut romantic comedy puts a clever spin on an age-old formula: instead of being marooned together in a snowstorm, Wax's protagonists are stuck in a publicity stunt complete with 24/7 Webcam. Dr. Olivia Moore is a radio therapist whose talk show has an earnest, emotional and sometimes anti-male twist. Matt Ransom's competing Guy Talk extols freewheeling bachelorhood and offers helpful advice like "get over it." Feuding between the two persists on-air until corporate headquarters decrees that one of them must go. To make the decision, Matt and Olivia are locked for a week into a tiny apartment, broadcasting their shows and emitting a live web feed to help fans signal their favorite. Naturally, tensions in the cramped space run high—complicated by sexual attraction, competitive fire and unresolved issues from the intense affair Matt and Olivia shared eight years earlier. It's never clear why Matt loves the defensive and inflexible Olivia. Then again, she's blonde and sexy, so maybe it's what he would call "a guy thing." The romance is appealing despite this flaw, but the novel's real strength is the witty clash of the two gender-battling shows and the glimpse it offers of the wacky world of radio.

Faced with the possible cancellation of their respective radio talk shows, feminist advice expert Dr. Olivia Moore and super-macho Guy Talk host Matt Ransom agree to spend the week together in "the smallest apartment on Earth"-on-camera-in a charity publicity stunt that is guaranteed to raise ratings and determine which of their shows will survive. But Livvy and Matt have a hidden past, and the idea of so much togetherness is definitely unnerving. The results, however, are predictably romantic. Wax's first romantic comedy is a witty, battle-of-the-sexes tale and a perfect summertime read. Wax has written a number of children's books and lives in Atlanta.

Atlanta's radio station WTLK has competing call-in hosts: Dr. Olivia Moore, a credentialed psychologist dealing with women's problems, on the early morning shift, and Matt Ransom, a guy's guy, on late night. In a ratings scheme, the boss decides that the two of them should share an apartment for a week, living and doing their shows under the scrutiny of a 24-hour Webcam. Pledges for a food bank count as votes from the listeners. The winner gets to keep his or her show, while the loser moves on. The kicker is that these two have a secret history, a past torrid love affair with an unsatisfactory ending, but ambition and pride prevent them from refusing the challenge. Is the outcome predictable? You bet! But chemistry and romance take unexpected turns, real problems and emotions are addressed, and answers are not exactly simple. Entertaining, lively, and engaging, this is an excellent summer read.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2003, American Library Association.)
