Best friends Amy and Hayley come from vastly different family dynamics. Amy was raised by a loving single mom, while Hayley has suffered at the hands of an alcoholic father and a needy mother. The girls each face obstacles owing to their upbringings-Amy is somewhat spoiled and naïve; Hayley is tough, with an outlook that borders on cynicism. The summer after Amy graduates from college the two friends decide to take jobs as nannies near the small Maine town where they both live. They see the work as a fun way to make a good salary before Amy moves to Boston and Hayley is financially able to leave the home of her abusive father. But the positions end up providing more than monetary gains as their experiences challenge them in unexpected ways that become a catalyst for change. VERDICT Chamberlin (Summer Friends) takes on the psychological repercussions of familial relationships to weave a satisfying and multifaceted story that keeps readers guessing. For fans of similar works by authors such as Shelley Noble and Nancy Thayer.--Karen Core, Detroit P.L.
