The accidental death of her high-school boyfriend, Jake, has haunted Quinn LaPointe in the decade since graduating and leaving her home in Butternut, Minnesota. Now a promising journalist in Chicago, Quinn believes the only way she can let go of the past is to confront it by returning to her former home and writing out her memories. Although Butternut remains beautiful and almost the same as when Quinn left, it seems its residents have changed quite a bit. Her former best friend, Gabriel, is cold towards her, while Annika, a former high-school enemy, has become friendly in the years since their last encounter. As the story plays out, Quinn learns more about the circumstances around Jake's death and begins to see that she may not be the only one with feelings of responsibility for the accident. Ultimately a story of healing, first loves, forgiveness, and home, the sixth book of the Butternut Lake series (after The Light in Summer?, 2017) is a great pick for anyone looking for an engaging, warm-hearted summer read, especially one with a beautiful midwestern setting.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
