K-Gr 4-Here is an intelligent math tool that can be used by an individual child or with groups. Each section of the book consists of a repetitious rhyme about a bug on a two-page spread full of bright pastels and friendly dark colors, followed by a second spread that shows a close-up of the insect and the last word of the poem in heavy, large letters. By using the sounds in the poems, the details of the pictures, and the various blocks of color that frame the initial spread, children can find and identify repetitive patterns. The author's note states that, "Each picture contains six patterns that match that picture's border." Unfortunately, notes about the book's intended use and an explanation of an AAB pattern appear on the last page, and some readers, including adults, may have no idea what to make of it all until they finish flipping through the pages. The concepts will undoubtedly have to be explained and demonstrated to the youngest readers, but even some third and fourth graders will take joy in trying to "figure out" the book and play the game-once they know what they're supposed to do. An excellent way to prove to reluctant readers that books can be lots of fun.-Thomas Pitchford, Rosenthal Elementary, Alexandria, LA
