Gr 3-5 -The kids in 1920s Scenic, WA, are at it again. When Billy Cole finds a secret note and a pistol inside a burlap sack, he and his sidekicks Finn and Dannie are on their way to solving a mystery that helps prevent a train robbery. The historical context of the story enriches the plot and adds a bit of flavor to the characters' motives. Capeci's notes on life in 1926 give readers an inside view of the period as well as information about the railroad tunnel, silk trains, and the use of telegraphs. The appended contemporary photographs and reproductions are a welcome addition.
