The conclusion of Dark's Fairwick Chronicles (The Demon Lover, 2012; The Water Witch, 2013) opens with a tumultuous beginning to a new academic year for Professor Callie McFay. With the closing of the gate to Faerie, Fairwick, town and college, is seeing extreme changes. The new dean, Duncan Laird, a Nephilim and wizard, is set on destroying everything good in Fairwick and beyond. Through a string of strange connections, Callie learns that a stone missing from a brooch she owns is the only thing that can vanquish the Nephilim. But it was last seen in the seventeenth century in the village of Ballydoon, Scotland. Callie must figure out how to travel back in time to retrieve the stone. Eventually, she is sent on her way, thanks to a group of witches and the Stewarts with their magical plaid. Dark skillfully entwines the past and present, the mundane and magical, love and loss, to spin a beautifully nuanced and sensuous tale rooted in legend and lore.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
