The intrigue-heavy first romance in Knight’s Prince Charlie’s Angels series (after the Sutherland Legacy series) features a formidable heroine fierce enough to sway a conflicted soldier to join her growing rebellion. In 1745 Scotland, Lady Jenny Mackintosh, sister of a staunchly pro-English Laird, leads a double life as the mysterious Mistress J, secretly growing a Jacobite rebellion to retake Scotland from the Brits. While recruiting men to her cause, she stumbles on Toran Fraser and his cousin, Archie, who are on the run from the English. Toran has no love for the Jacobites, believing them to be responsible for his mother’s murder, but he’s no friend to the English either, having just saved the rebellious Archie from hanging at their hands. Toran pretends to join Jenny’s rebellion both for a place to hide from his pursuers and in hopes of avenging his mother. But the closer he gets to Jenny, the more she makes him see who the real enemies are. The intrigue and historical details are captivating, but readers should be prepared for an excruciatingly slow burn in the love story, which remains relatively understated for a large chunk of the novel. Fans of strong female protagonists and subtle passion will be pleased. Agent: Kevan Lyon, Marsal Lyon Literary.
