Seven months ago, budding chef Chrissie Jenkins saw the writing on the wall; fled New Jersey and her abusive, addicted boyfriend; and came home to Gigi--her great-grandmother Ruby--and her family's Chesapeake roots on Cannonball Island, the only place Chrissie has ever felt safe. She's mending slowly, and with a job at a trendy locavore restaurant, a growing group of friends, and a casual relationship with salvage diver Jared Chandler that just might turn into something else, Chrissie sees her self-confidence gradually returning. If only she could get rid of the bone-deep fear that, regardless of her careful planning, her violent ex is going to track her down. VERDICT Rich with local history, familiar characters (practical, fierce, and often clairvoyant centenarian Ruby is a standout), and the slow-paced, downhome flavor of the bay, Stewart's latest is certain to please fans and add a few new ones. A laid-back summertime charmer--with a dollop of magic and a perilous edge. Stewart (The Chesapeake Bride) lives in Chester County, PA.
