Miss Switch Online

Jeff Woodman's talent shines in this madcap school-based adventure. Miss Switch, the witch, pays another visit to Pepperdine Elementary School, this time when Rupert is in sixth grade. As the kindly witch transforms into a substitute teacher and back to herself, Rupert is the only one who knows everyone's identity until he lets a friend in on the secret. Woodman credibly passes himself off as an 11-year-old, complete with the intermittently squeaky voice of a near adolescent. A happy ending concludes this funny and enjoyable tale. A.G.H. Gr 3-6-Just when sixth grader Rupert P. Brown thinks Miss Switch has disappeared, she turns up again in the form of Miss Blossom, a new teacher at Pepperdine Elementary in this book by Barbara Brooks Wallace (Atheneum, 2002). Miss Blossom is really Miss Switch in disguise, with clothing and wig straight from a yard sale. Once Rupert figures everything out, the action begins. Rupert discovers a Web site maintained by Saturna, and he gives Miss Switch some computer lessons. Using the Web Miss, the duo does its best to hinder Saturna and her brother as they try to cause havoc at the elementary school. Saturna has helped her dumb but handsome brother get a job as the substitute principal at Pepperdine, but even with Saturna on his side he is no match for Rupert and Miss Switch. While some of the story elements may grab listeners' attention, this sequel just is not as entertaining as the first two Miss Switch books. Jeff Woodman's narration is excellent, and the sound quality is good. Libraries with Miss Switch fans may want to add this to their collections, but otherwise it is not an essential purchase.-Ginny Harrell, William McGarrah Elementary School, Morrow, GA
