Discovering she's pregnant on her wedding day and terrified of raising a child with her abusive fiancé, Darby Dixon gathers her courage along with her billowy wedding dress and escapes Fort Hood, TX, heading for Colorado Springs--and, with luck, a fresh start. Scott "Trex" Trexler, former U.S. Marine and FBI agent and now head of security (and back with his previous battle-scarred team) at a top-secret government facility in Colorado Springs, is in search of a new beginning as well--one that he hopes will include Darby. But Darby has no interest in dating, and soldiers, firefighters, cops, and other macho men are definitely off-limits--until she gets to know Trex. A heroine who reclaims her life and her self-respect and a hero who's at her side deal with raging forest fires, lingering trust issues, and a revenge-driven ex. The alternating first-person viewpoints between Darby and Trex give this a new adult/YA vibe. VERDICT Heartfelt emotions, serious social concerns, and exceptional character development result in a touching modern romance with inspirational overtones; a sure winner. Links to the author's early "Maddox Brothers" series will please fans. McGuire (All the Little Lights) lives in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Karissa Vacker and Andrew Eiden provide a fun yet heartfelt back-and- forth narration of the first in the Crash and Burn series. Darby arrives in Colorado Springs after leaving her abusive fianc at the altar. She's pregnant and wants no commitments, but for federal agent Scott "Trex" Trexler it's love at first sight. Vacker uses a cute Texas drawl that is distinctive for Darby. Her well-paced narration reflects Darby's tentative hopes for her life and her fear of dating men in the military. Eiden's narration is a little quicker in pace and staccato in enunciation, matching Trex's no-nonsense decision making, which saved his life many times in combat. Eiden's narration flexes to encompass both Trex's intense masculinity and his sensitivity to Darby's traumatic past. The narrators contribute equally to an engaging listen.
