Tourists surge to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for summer, but permanent residents know the desolation that dwells there. Sara Lennox, whose name isn't really Sara Lennox, hopes to escape her past, not to mention her two witness protection program agents, when she moves into an Outer Banks apartment complex called the Paradise. Despite being determined to keep to herself, another Paradise family captures her attention, especially when the mother disappears, triggering Sara's memories of her own family. Whit Nelson is left to watch after his two kids, Cassie and Boon, but Cassie doesn't believe she needs parenting, and Boon can't get past missing his mother. When a hurricane hits the Outer Banks, Sara has to make a quick decision that will change the future for all of them. Alternating the perspectives of Sara, Cassie, and Whit results in a wonderfully complex and multilayered drama complete with the suspense that keeps pages turning. Fans of Kate White and Diane Chamberlain will be asking if it's possible for a child to leave the past behind long after the book ends.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
