In Whittle’s skillfully plotted sixth mystery featuring witty, intrepid Atlanta gun shop owner Tai Randolph (after 2016’s Reckoning and Ruin), PI Finn Hudson approaches Tai’s boyfriend, Trey Seaver, a SWAT-trained corporate security agent. Finn asks Trey to look into an attempt on the life of Nicholas Talbot; years before Talbot was arrested for his wife’s murder, but the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence. Trey, who was one of the police officers who responded to the crime scene, is convinced that Nicholas was guilty. Soon Tai and Trey are pulled into the orbit of the Talbot brothers, who have a major stake in the hit television series Moonshine, a Prohibition-era werewolf drama filmed in Atlanta. A fine cast of believable—if eccentric—characters includes conniving actresses, jilted lovers, pushy financial backers, and stalker-fans, each with his or her own weighty agenda. Tai and Trey, with all their strengths and foibles, make a top-notch team. Readers will look forward to their further adventures. Agent: Paige Wheeler, Creative Media Agency.

When PI Finn Hudson shows up in Tai Randolph's Atlanta gun shop, neither she nor lover Trey Seaver are prepared for the invitation that borders on a threat. Former hotshot movie producer Nicholas Talbot swears he survived an assassination attempt by a sniper, and he suspects Trey. Four years earlier, as a SWAT sniper, Trey was second at the murder scene of Talbot's wife. He had always suspected Nick, who now wants to meet with him. Once Trey is convinced of Nick's innocence, he wants to find the actual killer. It's a case that will draw Trey into a past he doesn't fully remember because of a car accident. The investigation will change the direction of Trey and Tai's lives. The sixth title, following Reckoning and Ruin, is the dramatic culmination of this series' primary story arc with the two damaged protagonists, after struggling with family and personal demons, finding answers and moving on with their lives. While the mystery is filled with complex characters, it's the uncertainty, pain, and awkwardness of the two leads that drives this intense story. VERDICT Karin Slaughter readers may enjoy this work, but it will be most appreciated by followers of this character-driven series.--Lesa Holstine, Evansville Vanderburgh P.L., IN

Partners in work and life investigate the Hollywood crew that's come to town. When he's first approached to reopen the Jessica Talbot murder, a cold case from years before, Trey Seaver isn't having it. He's certain former producer Nick Talbot killed his wife even though Nick ended up going free. Although Trey was the second to respond to the crime scene, his police days are far behind, and he has no interest in dredging up the past. But a threat on Nick's life has made Trey a potential suspect, and he's obligated if not blackmailed to look into the case with the help of Tai Randolph, his partner in all things (Reckoning and Ruin, 2016, etc.). Tai knows Trey to be an excellent reader of people, a human lie detector, and when Nick pleads his case as an innocent man, Trey believes him and agrees to do whatever it takes to clear his name. Tai and Trey attempt to go undercover on the local Atlanta set of Moonshine, which Nick's working on along with writer Addison Canright, with whom Nick was cheating on Jessica and to whom he's now engaged. Nick's relationship with Addison is made even more complicated by his psychiatric history, which has led her to seek full conservatorship over him. Though Tai and Trey's undercover work is an ill-kept secret, the two get plenty of interested parties to spill their guts in hopes of disclosing the truth. Surrounded by a set of trained actors, Trey's difficulty in fingering the liar among the bunch makes him fear that his superpower may be dwindling. And Tai, who seems to think she's the archetypal spirited Southern girl with a few tricks up her sleeve, doesn't display the wit and verve that would make her a more appealing protagonist. The Author's Note and corresponding Pinterest board show Whittle's painstaking commitment to the details of her heroine's expensive La Perla lingerie and her hero's Ferrari in an adventure aimed at those with similar aspirations.
