Heaps of flirtatious scenes and supernatural havoc never quite kick-start the low-tension second Demons Unleashed paranormal romance (after June 2011’s Demons Prefer Blondes). Serah SanGermano is a caterer who happens to be a pure-blood, destined to save the world. She has a cat who is really an imp and friends who are a goddess and succubus. When the Fore-Demons assign her a bodyguard, paladin Matthias Ambrose, he quickly turns up the heat. Matthias and Serah share a past, and the present is steaming with chemistry. With humor and wry wit, Ayers offers small servings of romance, demon-slaying excitement, and mythology, but the characters spend far more time preparing for perils and pleasures than engaging in them. Readers will be left wanting less anticipation, more danger, less flirtation, and more sex. Agent: The Knight Agency.

Demons are still hanging around an altered Michigan, even though it seemed they were vanquished in Ayers' Demons Prefer Blondes (2011). Instead, they're now coming after hairdresser and sexubi princess Lucy's best friend, Serah, who survived a demon kidnapping. It turns out that Serah is a Pure-Blood, hence anathema to demon mentor Balthazar. To protect Serah, the Fore-Demon Court assigns Matthias, once Serah's kidnapper but now working to become a good-guy paladin, to watch over her. Chef and caterer Serah knows that demons have been after her because she can smell them and has during recent cooking disasters. But with the help of Lucy and her paladin lover Rafe as well as supernatural supporters, including an attack cat, a deceased but still protective grandmother, and a host of others, Serah isn't sure she needs Matthias' help, especially when their libidos heat to boiling whenever they're anywhere near each other. Ayers hasn't lost her touch for rollicking fun and interesting, inventive characters in this welcome sequel.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
