In the fourth novel of her acclaimed Darkest London series (after Winterblaze), set in 1885, Callihan introduces Mary Chase, who was killed by a runway gin wagon and brought back to life by the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals (SOS). Jack Talent is a tortured man, haunted by self-hatred and fiercely protective of those he loves—including Mary, who views him as a rival. When bodies begin turning up at Trafalgar Square, journalists dub the unknown killer the Bishop of Charing Cross, and Mary and Jack set out to hunt him down. Callihan’s solid worldbuilding draws the reader into 1885 London from the first page (though her use of the 20th-century term “ghosts in the machine” to describe the resurrected is disconcerting), and her lyrical writing will have readers racing to the thrilling finish.
Kristen Callihan's imaginative Darkest London series never disappoints, and Moira Quirk is the perfect narrator to bring each tension-filled scene to life. Mary Chase has been tasked by the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals to hunt down a ruthless killer known as the Bishop of Charing Cross. She's working alongside the mysterious, infuriating Jack Talent--a man who would do anything to make Mary his but whose secrets may put them both in deadly peril. Quirk manages the eccentric cast of characters with finesse, easily shifting accents and inflections and infusing her dialogue with emotion and urgency. The chemistry between the main characters is palpable, and the mystery elements are gripping, making this an irresistible listening experience for fans and newcomers alike. Mary Chase, operative for the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals, is thrilled to be on the hunt for a vile killer. She's less thrilled to be forced to work with her longtime rival and adversary Jack Talent. Jack's not happy, either, but the lethal Bishop of Charing Cross needs to be stopped, and they have no choice but to work together. VERDICT Intricately plotted, passionate, and totally engaging, this latest foray into Callihan's "Darkest London" world is a remarkable adventure. Callihan (Winterblaze) lives in the Washington, DC, area.
