Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan is called to Mountain Lake, North Carolina, when a stinking, fly-covered bag floats to the surface. Linda Emond's narration is easy on the ear, but at the same time an edgy toughness to her voice keeps up the tension. Although less than two hours in length, this story of a missing environmental studies student doesn't feel hurried, nor is it light on forensic detail. Emond's characterization of earthy detective "Skinny" Slidell is a satisfying counterpoint to the analytical Tempe as they work together to identify the surprising killer. C.A.T.
