This anthology series that collects winners of the PEN/Robert J. Dau Prize for debut short stories celebrates not only the talented writers who conceive them but also the literary magazines that publish them. In the 2019 edition, prominent issues of social justice and cultural strife are woven thematically throughout 12 stories. Stories of prison reform, the immigrant experience, and the aftermath of sexual assault make the book a vivid time capsule that will guide readers back into the ethos of 2019 for generations to come. One particularly memorable story is written as a manga strip in prose form. It tells the story of an American manga artist teaching English and exploring queer love in Japan, each panel a stunning string of language. In another story, a new mother leaves her infant on a boulder in the rain while she retreats home for a desperately needed moment of peace, begging readers to acknowledge (and relish in) the often suffocating experience of motherhood. Each story displays a mastery of the form, sure to inspire readers to seek out further writing from these adept authors and publications.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
