Starred review from July 29, 1996
FYI: Quentin Tarantino has bought film rights to four Leonard novels. Meanwhile, three other Leonard books, Last Stand at Saber River, Touch and Pronto, are in film or TV production.

Larry Foley, bank robber, breaks out of the joint. Gets some henchmen to abet him. Falls for the federal marshall, who just happens to be at the right place at the right time. The author is at his best. So is narrator George Guidall. His voice shines like a beacon, illuminating the book's dark souls and deeds. Guidall demands that we notice the irony, wit and coolness of the text. His elastic voice creates characters with their own memorable peculiarities, and his deliberate pacing works beautifully with Leonard's economical writing style. Every joke is clear, every twist is surprising, every herring is red. R.I.G. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
