K-Gr 2-Billy finds monsters to battle all over his house. Unfortunately, his mother only sees the big messes that result from these confrontations. After four days of dealing with a Tentacle Monster and Laundry Monster in his bedroom, a toilet-dwelling Tuna Monster, and a Bulbous Blob Monster that comes from the kitchen trash, the woman is fed up. She takes away her son's monster-fighting weapons and arms him with a new set of tools-a vacuum cleaner and a bucket of warm, soapy water. When a Gloppy Grass Clod Monster arrives, Billy attacks with the vacuum until the grimy threat is defeated. Now that he knows how to fight monsters and clean at the same time, Billy's mother rewards him by making a special Monster Hunter suit, complete with a helmet and a plunger. Although it is well-intentioned, this story about a wildly imaginative but disorderly child is unlikely to get readers excited about housecleaning. Hansen's chaotic pictures are too busy and show "messes" that depict wanton destruction rather than simple untidiness. A muddled, didactic story that tries too hard to entertain.-Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT
