Gr 3-6-Millie Nocmartis is a young witch struggling to develop her magical abilities. Although she excels in the kitchen, she just can't seem to cast a proper charm, much to her mother's disappointment. She's taunted and called "Duddy" by her cousins. One day, her grandmother and coven leader, Baba Luci, gives her an extraordinary opportunity. Millie leaves the familiarity of her coven for the Enchanted Forest School. While there, she befriends a pun-loving pixie, an elf with a passion for math, and her long-lost brother. With the help of her new friends and teachers, her magical powers and confidence begin to grow. Not without some setbacks, of course: Millie has to overcome a scheming cousin, Cretacia, and bully goblins who tease her. Just as she is beginning to blossom into an exceptionally talented witch, she discovers a family secret and is thrust into a journey across realms. In this debut novel, Sanchez brilliantly ties together the transformative powers of cooking and magic. The descriptions of Millie's kitchen creations, intentional and accidental, will have readers' mouths watering. VERDICT A great addition to any children's collection, this well-written fantasy will appeal to fans of Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted and Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson" series.-Meaghan Nichols, Archaeological Research Associates, Ont., Canada
