This exciting young adult tale is the reminiscence of 14-year-old Andy Galloway. While on a kayaking trip in Alaska, he sets off to a nearby island, where his father perished in a tragic accident several years before. After visiting the spot, an unexpected gale washes him ashore on Admiralty Island. Here, he struggles desperately to survive, finding help from a feral dog and a hermit. This suspenseful tale will keep listeners on the edge of their seats. De Ocampo superbly reads this tale; his voice has a juvenile quality that perfectly matches the text. M.T.F. Fans of Will Hobbs's wilderness adventure novels will welcome his Wild Man Island. Its hero, 14-year-old Andy Galloway, kayaks his way through an Alaskan strait and ends up on Admiralty Island on a quest inspired by the death of his archeologist father.

Gr 5-9-Will Hobbs' exciting, sometimes grisly survival story (HarperCollins, 2002) is narrated well by Ramon de Ocampo. It is a fast-paced, yet poignant tale of 14-year-old Andy Galloway, a boy on a kayaking trip in Alaska. After foolishly sneaking away from his group, Andy is blown off course by a vicious gale, ending up on the titular island. There he encounters a bizarre hermit and wild animals who threaten his very existence. Hobbs keeps the action hopping, while making Andy a three-dimensional, compelling character. De Ocampa plays him well, and tackles the action with finesse. However, due to a technical problem-the end of side two of tape three runs out mid-sentence so that six words from the text at the end of Chapter 19 are missing-purchase is not recommended at this time. This was a problem as well with a replacement copy. Hopefully this defect will be rectified.-Brian E. Wilson, Evanston Public Library, IL
