Israeli director/screenwriter Zarhin's debut novel, set in his hometown of Tiberias, is a long and winding story that follows a husband and wife who fell passionately in love when they were young. In turn, their eldest son, Shlomi, falls hopelessly for his neighbor Ella, and their families become intertwined. The residents in their apartment building, some of whom are Holocaust survivors, become an extended family. Although individuals migrate from Israel to South America to Paris and back, the emotional ties stretch over time and place. Burgeoning sexuality creates tension throughout. In time, Shlomi becomes a fabulous cook and opens a business: onions and garlic, turmeric and tomatoes and lentils waft throughout the story. Poetry and tragedy combined with national identity provide the backdrop for this extended saga. VERDICT Zarhin conjures up the aromas, heat, sandstorms, and beauty of Tiberias. Although it is lengthy, this dialog-driven novel will be appreciated by readers who have some knowledge of events in modern-day Israel.--Susanne Wells, Indianapolis P.L.
