Gr 4-6-This collection contains "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves," "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp," and the lesser known "Abu Keer and Abu Seer." The latter is about two friends, one who is kind and honest, the other who is selfish and deceitful, each of whom gets exactly what he deserves. The retellings are lengthy but tension builds successfully even for those familiar with the stories. Appealing pen-and-ink drawings are sprinkled throughout. Mitchell captures the elements of more mature versions including much of the grisliness (e.g., one of the 40 thieves getting boiled in oil in an urn). The colloquial tone, however, is at odds with the exotic setting and becomes tiresome. Abu Keer "toots his own horn," the thief captain notes that things are taken "right from under our noses," a job "sounds too fishy," and Abu Seer's wealth is shared "on the house" and so on (and on). With that caveat aside, this is a handy collection that is accessible to the target audience. An author's note details sources cited as well as a brief history of the tales."Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at Washington DC Public Library"

Noting in an afterword that he has freely adapted histellings, Mitchelloffers the twofamous stories from The Thousand and One Nights, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, and the lesser-known Abu Keer and Abu Seer. His retellings are occasionally over the top, especially when the cool, moderntalk blends with old-fashioned lavish luxury, including sumptuously dressed slave girls. What does work are the timeless themes of friendship and betrayal, the scary monsters, and the drama of the powerful brought down by the smart (okay, creative) young hero. And of course, Aladdin does marry the princess. The chapter-book design has spacious type as well as lively, informal black-and-white drawings that add to the fun.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
