Duncan Aylsham (code name, Tidewatcher), commander of a spy ship belonging to the top-secret British Alien Office, has been asked by Sir Edward Sunderland, his spymaster and mentor, to go to France to retrieve his daughter. Lisbeth Sunderland disgraced herself by eloping with an enemy agent and refuses to return to England without her infant son, who is still in her husband's clutches. Amid rumors that Napoleon is preparing to invade England, Duncan offers to reunite Lisbeth with her child in return for her help. Her mission: to insinuate herself into the household of American inventor Robert Fulton, who is in France working on a submersible that the British believe can be used to sabotage the French fleet. Meanwhile, there is a double agent aboard Duncan's ship, Jacobins are plotting to assassinate Napoleon and restore the monarchy, and Lisbeth and Duncan are increasingly drawn to each other. This dense and detailed novel, with its thicket of fictional and historical characters, of plots and counterplots, requires some patience, but persistent readers who like a mix of espionage, history, and romance will be rewarded.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
