Published 100 years ago and now reissued, the first Arab American novel tells the timeless leaving-home story with wit and heartbreak. At the turn of the century, young Khalid is smuggled into Manhattan, where he struggles to survive as a pushcart peddler in the Western Paradise. Tricked by the corrupt from Ellis Island to the Bronx, he returns to Lebanon, where family, church, and state throw him out as a decadent atheist anarchist from Europe. The postmodern-type narrative is difficult at times, addressing the Reader about the book itself. But the wry commentary makes universal connections, positive about Emerson and Thoreau, furious about American materialisma sweating ecstasy of gain in which the dollar is deity. But just as absurd is the dervish who whips himself into a foaming ecstasy of devotion. Can science and faith together free the world from the captains of industry and the high priests of the temple? With a climactic Arab Springlike uprising, this will spark debate about what is happening now.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
