Gr 3-5-Poynter discusses the dangerous environmental impact of plastic use and the ways to reduce use, supported by interviews with influential environmentalists. The author, depicted as a cartoon version of himself, addresses readers with phrases such as "ladies and gentlegerms." Poynter is meant to be a guide to readers and provide accessible knowledge about some of the high-profile environmental issues discussed in the news. However, the organization of the book is all over the place. One page features commentary from Poynter, and then an interview, followed by an infographic about the aquatic food web. The first chapter of the book doesn't begin until page 37. While some of the information is very valuable, such as the infographics about small changes readers can make to lessen their plastic consumption, information is presented in several different ways and in a casual enough manner that the message gets lost with every abrupt transition. VERDICT An additional purchase where environmental sustainability topics are of interest.-Molly Dettmann, Norman North High School, OK

Poynter, a musician and activist, compiles an emboldening guide for young people looking to lend their efforts to save our “awesome blue planet,” beginning with the reduction of single-use plastic. Maintaining a positive outlook and encouraging tone, Poynter outlines the many problems created by plastic consumption, supported by scientific studies, visually mapped statistics, and interviews with leaders of various environmental movements working to combat the repercussions of nonbiodegradable waste. While compelling and comprehensive, the narrative can at times feel a tad long-winded; likewise, the visual design oscillates between well-charted concepts and text-heavy portions. Accented with neon green, the black-and-white features demonstrative spot illustrations and interviewee photographs. While over-the-top in some ways, it offers a wealth of information to glean. Ages 8–12.
