Loutzenhiser's debut is an engaging (although not impenetrable) puzzler anchored by well-realized and endearing characters with diverse family structures. Zan, Logan, and their birth families are white. Priya's mother is Indian, and her stepfather white. Zan's mother has a live-in girlfriend with brown skin. Gr 7 Up-A fast-paced mystery wrapped inside a love story, Loutzenhiser's novel follows a month in the life of Zan, a teenage girl whose best friend Priya moves to California and ghosts her-ending their relationship by ceasing all communication. What makes matters worse is that all of Priya's social media posts show a change in her character. Zan believes Priya has become a shallow version of herself, someone her former best friend was not. She makes a new friend in Logan, and with him she shares her grief at the loss of her friendship with Priya. When Zan discovers something strange in Priya's latest selfie, she is worried that something more nefarious may have happened to her former best friend. Zan and Logan begin to investigate. Loutzenhiser's writing is compelling and will connect with readers who live a large part of their lives through social media and online culture. The novel features a diverse cast of characters and offers a realistic look at friendship in the digital age. Grades 8-11 Inseparable since childhood, Zan and Priya have a friendship that can withstand a lot?and so, though she's heartbroken about Priya's sudden move from Chicago to California, Zan hardly expects Priya to just ghost her. But that's exactly what Priya does, going suddenly silent despite Zan's repeated attempts to contact her by email and phone. Priya's Instagram, though, is filled with posts that don't even sound like her: standard shots of California accompanied by bland captions. It's not until Zan meets Logan, the new guy in her Spanish class, with a mysterious past of his own, that she's able to say out loud the crazy things she's been thinking: that's not Priya. Priya's in trouble. And it's up to Zan, who knows her well enough to pull out the minuscule clues in her social media, to figure out how to save her. This fast-paced debut features a smart, deeply insecure heroine and is as much an examination of friendship as it is a light thriller.
