Gr 7 Up-Kyra is confronted with numerous challenges that demand judicious decisions. Foremost is coming to terms with her Makvani heritage: using the power to shape-shift and mastering the resulting ferocity. No longer a member of the Assassin's Guild, Kyra works with Forge's council and enjoys a quiet city life with her adopted family. This tranquility comes to a halt when she attacks noblemen who savagely assaulted her adoptive sister. Kyra's Demon Rider bloodline exposed, she and her family flee the city. This is a story about power, loyalty, friendship, and family. Events unfold quickly-a rival city plots the capture of Forge, Kyra's search for information about her parents leads to a startling revelation, and with the help of Tristam, Kyra saves Forge and negotiates a treaty between her city and the Makvani. Bianca Amato's narration is superb. VERDICT This volume surveys the maturation of Kyra and her development into a leader.
