Any fan of baseball within the last 20 years will appreciate the game's changes off the field. This book breaks down the evolution of the Tampa Bay Rays' existence from the vantage of the front office. The first half deals with the old-school owner, whose outdated, static ways simply could not evolve. The second half focuses on the new owner, who cut his teeth in the private equity market rather than the ball field. Lloyd James keeps pace with a clear tone, but his botched pronunciations of at least half a dozen players' names will jar fans who know better. However, they won't impede the enjoyment of the book, which is a fascinating story that never bogs down with too many numbers. M.B. (c) AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
