In this collection of lectures originally given in 1983 and here edited by Berliner (cochairman, board of directors, Ayn Rand Inst.; Letters of Ayn Rand), Peikoff (founder, Ayn Ran Inst.; Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand), Ayn Rand's literary and philosophical heir, presents an analysis of Rand's philosophy of objectivism and the role it can play in an individual's life. According to Peikoff, one doesn't just study objectivism; instead, one comes to understand it through philosophical analysis and then by living by its principles and values. He writes that objectivism is meant as an aid in using the full potential of the mind to understand oneself and the world; it functions by uniting the two mental processes of abstraction and perception. This unison increases comprehension of events in the world and allows the practitioner to view events in a more positive manner; this will, in turn, enhance one's overall success and happiness. VERDICT This is not meant to be an introduction to objectivism, but readers who have read Rand's writings and are looking for a more in-depth examination of her theories will find it highly appealing.--Scott Duimstra, Capital Area Dist. Lib., Lansing, MI
