Author Lewis, named a 2013 "Traveler of the Year" by National Geographic's Traveler magazine, is a polyglot with average natural aptitude. He begins by debunking 20 common myths about learning a new language and then discusses his definition of "fluency"--more than "functional tourist" but not textbook perfection. Lewis sees language as communication, and his readers are encouraged to begin speaking right away, correcting mistakes and increasing vocabulary as they go. He provides information on web resources, and emphasizes finding real-life speaking partners. He also suggests listening to radio programs and dubbed movies to improve comprehension and accent. One chapter includes "Tips for Starting Specific Languages," but overall the book gives general strategies such as focusing on one language, memorizing common phrases and responses, and practicing with conversation partners almost immediately. VERDICT Though "fluent" in three months may be a stretch, those with about two hours a day (or those willing to have language learning fill their free time) may reach that goal. This would be especially helpful for those wanting to learn a new language to connect with people rather than as an academic pursuit.--Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley Sch., Fort Worth, TX
