One of the most intriguing new Bibles, bound in flexible hemp-like cloth, it bears not a cross on its cover but a tree, an apt symbol of the whole enterprise. Gone are "the words of the Lord in red"instead we have words "tracing environmental themes" in green, which results in embarrassingly long stretches of all-black type. Added are pieces by "inspirational" authors, including Francis of Assissi, who, in his humility, would have been appalled by such elevation above the words of his God. With over 100 pages of prefatory material by the likes of Desmond Tutu, Barbara Brown Taylor, and the late John Paul II before a word of Genesis. Deceptively like this one, but aimed at hunters more than preservers, is a novelty reprint, Nelson's Great Outdoors Bible, now in waterproof artificial leather in camouflage colors!
