In the shifting and uncertain world of modern business, leaders need to have guts to adapt to the challenges that arise. Leadership consultant Baldoni (Lead with Purpose; The Leader's Pocket Guide) breaks down what traits lead to effective leadership and innovation by studying men and women at the top of their game, those who prepare themselves for the constancy of change while at the same time inspiring others to follow them. The author pairs each attribute in the MOXIE acronym--Mindfulness, Opportunity, X factor, Innovation, and Engagement--with a hero example, from Nelson Mandela to Dolly Parton, to demonstrate risk taking and inner resourcefulness in action. The book is likewise replete with interviews from CEOs, and each chapter concludes with a list of questions and directives to tie the audience into the discussion. A quick read, the book is inspiring rather than academic. Dealing with the turbulent nature of business requires a bold person at the head of an organization, and Baldoni shows numerous examples of such people. VERDICT A solid addition to the leadership section on the business shelf.--Laurel Tacoma, Strayer Univ. Lib., Washington, DC

Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher, and Dolly Parton have something in commonthey exhibit moxie, or the effective combination of inner leadership qualities of toughness and charisma. Moxie is also an acronym for the leadership framework developed by Baldoni to help readers identify and cultivate their inherent leadership tendencies, whether in a professional workplace setting or in daily-life interactions. For example, the M stands for mindfulnesshow awareness of one's situation and what can be done to improve it can generate opportunities to shape a leader's character and drive improvements for oneself and others. This isn't the kind of book that prescribes strategies for how to lead, or that provides techniques for managing people. It's more of a conceptual, inspiring, reflective guide for self-assessment and improvement. Using examples from current and historical leaders and companies, including the CEOs of ConocoPhillips, Chiquita Brands, and Fiat and Chrysler, it illustrates how savvy leaders use opportunity and innovation to overcome obstacles, reinvent, and make change work for them. Helpful leadership directives in each chapter suggest specific actions to develop that moxie.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
