Grades 6-9 Lydia belongs to a close-knit Amish community in Pennsylvania, where daily routines, social relations, and obligations to family are tightly circumscribed. When her younger sister falls seriously ill, the expectations ratchet up considerably for Lydia to help with medical bills and maintain the household as the oldest sibling, while her mother and little Ruthie undergo hospital stays. Feeling a bit adrift and rebellious one day, Lydia drinks with some youth-group friends, a move that could threaten her future in the village. Also, she befriends a new Englisher (non-Amish) neighbor to the consternation of watchful friends and family. Lydia's inner conflicts, her yearning to do the right thing, her feelings for her Amish boyfriend, and the clash with Dat (Dad) over family pressures will resonate with readers. The glimpse into Amish life, meanwhile, will fascinate: children conclude studies early and choose a career in the community when they are quite young. Clipston includes a glossary of the Amish terms liberally sprinkled throughout the story.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
