In Dunn’s slow-developing fifth novel featuring Will Cochrane (after 2014’s Dark Spies), the assassination of Israel’s French ambassador puts Israel on the brink of waging a war to end Hamas. Adm. Tobias Mason, an adviser to the U.S. president, creates a joint intelligence outpost in Beirut manned by four top agents—French, British, American, and Israeli—to discover whether Hamas was responsible for the assassination. When the four are found shot dead in their operational headquarters, it appears that American agent Roger Koenig killed them before being killed himself. Mason tasks Cochrane, now a free agent no longer attached to the CIA-MI6 Task Force S, to investigate. A mysterious and shadowy figure known only as Thales puts two able men in motion to stop Cochrane. In addition, a mole in Mason’s office monitor’s Cochrane’s every move. A subplot involving a 12-year-old West Bank youth adds some suspense to this otherwise routine spy thriller. Agent: Luigi Bonomi, Luigi Bonomi Associates (U.K.).

With the Israeli ambassador to France assassinated in Paris and Israel planning a massive strike against presumed perpetrator Hamas, France, the UK, and the United States assemble a team of intelligence agents to determine what really happened. Then all four agents are found dead in a locked bunker, and icily daring freelance intelligence operative Will Cochrane is called in to solve everything. Cochrane's next breathtaking case after Dark Spies.

Dunn's latest in his Spycatcher series is another page-turner. In a locked-room twist on the espionage novel, a sniper in Paris shoots the Israeli ambassador in a seemingly impregnable safe house, and the blame-meisters kick into high gear. It only gets worse when a UN Security Council group convenes, and three members are soon found killed, too. Clearly, this is a case for Will Cochrane, all the more so because one of the victims was a close personal friend of the vaunted spycatcher. Dunn maintains his up-tempo pace without sacrificing character development and while allowing the tension to build incrementally. The ending makes clear that another entry in the series is on the way, and it can't arrive fast enough.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
