Grades 7-10 Taking Stolarzs Blue Is for Nightmares series into the graphic-novel realm is a bold idea, and it pays off in this morbidly entertaining and surprisingly romantic page-turner. Stacey and Jacob both have nightmares in which they see the future, but even this kind of foresight wasnt able to keep them together. She is a freshman in college; he is living far away in a Colorado ski town. In alternate sections, the stories-within-stories recap of their past relationshipas well as the various crimes and deaths related to their visionsis a graphic-novelists dream. Gorrissens cluttered black-and-white art reflects the schizophrenia of Staceys and Jacobs lives (one part wooing, two parts murderous mayhem) and takes full advantage of unusual panel construction and clever sidebars, including paper-doll-style introductions (complete with tabbed, swappable clothes) of important characters. The story's weirdo flashes of humor make the darkness bearable, as do the everyday settings of a pizza parlor and dorm room. A unique and somewhat unhinged blend of realism and fantasy.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
