Italy was mostly settled by Rome north to the Tuscany region. Beyond there, the territory was disputed by barbarians. To the south, at the tip of the peninsula, other than a few instances of garrisons turning on the citizens, the land was under control. Across the Messina Strait, Sicilia was a political and bloody battleground between Carthage and Syracuse. In the east, it had only been four or more years since many of the cities were brought into the Roman Republic.
