PreS-Gr 3-Using the repeated phrase, "If you lived where the sea was and then wasn't," Hodgkins explores life in the tidal zone. Mussels, crabs, barnacles, and sea stars are among the many inhabitants that must adapt to the twice-daily rise and fall of the tide. In describing the sea anemone, the author explains, "If you lived where the sea was and then wasn't, you could].Turn yourself outside-in." Additional facts are set off by parentheses: "(The sea anemone pulls its tentacles inside when the tide goes out. It has enough water inside its blobby body to stay alive until the sea returns)." Sollers's colorful spreads depict each animal at high and low tide. The rhythmic pattern of the text appeals to the ear, while the vibrant paintings engage the eye as they accurately depict the creatures and their constantly changing habitat. This book is a worthy introduction to creatures of the shoreline for beginning readers, as well as an engaging read-aloud."Carole Phillips, Greenacres Elementary School, Scarsdale, NY"
